Over the last 25 years or more, Irish Governments Departments and Agencies have been amoung the biggest procurers of marketing communications in the country. From advertising to design, and from public relations to market research, communications by the State influences our lives, in so many ways.
There has been a notable increase in the sophistication and creativity of Government- funded campaigns to cater for a more media savvy generation and to work within a much more complex news landscape.
John Concannon has been one the architects of some of the most powerful marketing and cultural initiatives by the State in recent times. These range from the 2013 global event that was 'The Gathering', to being part of the creation of the already iconic 'Wild Atlantic Way', to leading the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme to commemorate 1916 and reflect on the last 100 years.
John was also Director of Creative Ireland, and Chairman of Gaisce -The President’s Award, and more recently was Director of Strategic Communications in the Dept of Taoiseach where he led a major project to streamline communications across Government. He was recently appointed to the role of Director General, Global Ireland, an ambitious programme to double Irelands impact in the world by 2025, including the challenge to help Ireland win a seat on the UN Security Council.
With his original background in the commercial enterprise, where he worked in Unilever for 9 years prior to the state sector, John is uniquely placed to provide the Marketing Society with a perspective on the importance and role of strategic marketing practice in how the State engages with its citizens.
