Learning from the past

Deirdre Wafer as Chairperson of the Marketing Society is delighted to introduce you to our Insight Series. The series of conversations spanning 5 decades of the Marketing Society will explore some of the key shocks, trends and industry evolutions that defined the past 50 years.


The Insight Series, The 70’s with Gerard Kavanagh


Global Recession, The Troubles and Political Turmoil

On graduating from UCD in 1969 Gerard started his career in J Walter Thompson Advertising agency in London before moving to Paris in 1974 to Office National de Tourisme Irlandais (Bord Fáilte), and Chesebrough-Ponds International in Paris as a marketing manager. In the late 70’s Gerard returned to Ireland as Marketing Manager in Gallaghers where he spent seven years, after which he moved to The Irish Times. Gerard has had a number of other roles including lecturing and as a former chair of the Marketing Society and not least he was awarded a Knighthood by République Française (Chevalier dans l’Ordres des Palmes Académiques), for services to Culture and Education.

Oil Crisis, Europe and a Lack of Confidence

Robin started his career in London in 1962 before coming to Ireland in 1967 to join Irish Marketing Surveys. He set up Lansdowne Market Research in 1979 and was subsequently chair of the IMS group. He was one of the founding members of the Marketing Society of Ireland and was the recipient of our inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. He has been instrumental in placing research and insights at the heart of Irish marketing.


The Insight Series, The 70’s with Jerry Liston


Vietnam, Nixon, Industrial Unrest and Uncertainty

Jerry Liston was educated at Gonzaga. He was initially marketing manager at WR Grace, next at PJ Carroll before reaching the top at United Drug where he spent 26 years before retiring in 2000. He has since been chairman of the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business UCD, chair of the Irish Aviation Authority and on various boards including National Toll Roads, Glanbia and Gresham Hotels. Jerry was chair of the Marketing Society from 75-76.

A revolution in the Political and Economic System

John Fanning was the Managing Director of McConnell’s Advertising 1980--1999, and Chairman 2000-2005. John now lectures in Branding and Marketing Communications at the Smurfit Business School and published 'The Importance of Being Branded: An Irish Perspective' (Liffey Press) in 2006. In addition, he writes regular articles on branding and marketing communications in Irish Marketing Review, Marketing Magazine and the Irish Times and is the Chairman of Bord Bia's Brand Forum.


The Insight Series, The 80’s with Roger Jupp


Roger Jupp spent most of his career as Managing Director of Lansdowne Market Research, which is now Kantar Ireland. He specialised in opinion polling, customer satisfaction and financial research but also worked on significant international projects, like the EU's Eurobarometer. He was Chairman of the Marketing Institute of Ireland, Vice-Chairman of the Marketing Society, a long-term ESOMAR representative for Ireland and Chairman of AIMRO.

Globalisation and the Restructuring of the Advertising Industry

Mary Lambkin is Professor of Marketing at the Smurfit Graduate Business School, University College Dublin, where she teaches and writes on marketing strategy, branding and consumer trends. She is also actively involved in business through consulting and non-executive directorships. She currently Chairs the Board of Barclaycard International Payments and has also served on the boards of Citibank Europe PLC and several public organisations. She is a former Chair and Council member of the Marketing Society.

The Internet Arrives

Tom Harper is a data scientist with over 30 years’ experience in statistics, market research and advertising. Tom has worked in television audience measurement as well as retail store measurement with companies such as Nielsen and Kantar. Tom specialises in advertising effectiveness, from econometrics to digital attribution modelling, working in companies such as Media Audits, Analytic Partners and Omnicom Media Group. Tom is a keen supporter of education in these fields and has lectured part time with UCD and The Michael Smurfit Business School. Tom is a past chairman of both the Marketing Society and AIMRO.

Economic Shocks and Adapting to an Online World

As Director of Communications and Education with the Office of Tobacco Control from 2000-2005, Valerie was responsible for leading the policy and strategy to create a supportive environment for the introduction of the ‘smoking ban’ in Ireland. As the first country to introduce a comprehensive ban, Ireland was recognised as a global leader attracting international attention and subsequently many countries followed suit. Today, Valerie is a Senior Policy Analyst with the Department of Finance and previously served as the Department’s Corporate Communications Manager.

Recession and a Polarisation of Society

Sinead co-founded RED C Research in 2003 prior to which she was a director in Lansdowne Market Research. An award winning researcher and graduate of the College of Marketing and Design, Sinead is Vice Chair of the Marketing Society, a member of the Marketing Institute and is a regular guest lecturer at The Smurfit Business School and has also guest lectured at DIT.

The role for The Marketing Society

Deirdre leads the Insights team for LinkedIn Marketing Solutions in EMEA and works to deliver value to brand and media agency clients from Linkedin’s unique first party data.
